Synopsis: McLaren Macomb significantly reduced hysterectomy surgical site infections (SSIs) through a focused infection prevention initiative supported by MRO’s clinical data abstraction and surveillance expertise. The effort improved patient outcomes, strengthened CMS quality performance, and resulted in zero CMS-reportable hysterectomy SSIs.
When McLaren Macomb identified a rise in CMS-reportable hysterectomy surgical site infections, the organization launched a multidisciplinary initiative to improve patient safety, reduce infection-related costs, and protect reimbursement performance.
Working alongside MRO, the hospital implemented structured case reviews, addressed root causes, strengthened infection prevention practices, and leveraged near-real-time surveillance support. The effort resulted in zero CMS-reportable hysterectomy SSIs across 58 eligible procedures and a 2025 SIR of 0.000, significantly outperforming its target.
