Collaborative Intelligence™
The exponential power of partnering technology with expertise.
High value decisions still require human judgment, clinical expertise, and institutional knowledge. Collaborative Intelligence is MRO’s framework for partnering AI, automation, and the largest team of clinical experts in the nation to enable more efficient workflows and better outcomes.

The Premise
Amplify, don’t cut and paste.
Healthcare data volume grows 47% a year. Eighty percent of clinical data is unstructured. The pressure to use AI to close the gap is real, and so is the temptation to over-automate.
At MRO, we have spent more than two decades curating clinical data with more than 1,000 clinical experts. That work has taught us something the AI conversation often misses: in clinical abstraction, the judgment calls are where the value is. The patterns are where the time goes.
Collaborative Intelligence is built around that distinction. AI takes on the patterns. Clinical experts make the judgments. Together they learn to produce better outcomes.

Together, they learn & improve
Every decision feeds refinement. The system gets smarter at your cases.
How it Works
A continuous loop, not a one-way handoff.
Collaborative Intelligence is operational, not aspirational. Here is what the loop actually looks like inside MRO’s curation work.
Prodigy surfaces a suggestion.
The chart is read, the relevant evidence is identified, and a value is proposed. Every suggestion appears with three things visible to the abstractor: a written explanation, a confidence rating, and the source excerpt from the chart that supports it.
- Written explanation
- Confidence rating
- Source excerpt
The clinical expert decides.
The abstractor accepts, modifies, or rejects the suggestion based on clinical context, registry definitions, and the full case picture. Each decision sharpens the abstractor’s own pattern recognition over time.
- Accept
- Modify
- Reject
The system learns.
Each decision feeds Prodigy’s refinement, so the AI gets better at the kinds of cases this client, this registry, and this specialty require.
- Registry-specific
- Specialty-aware
- Client-calibrated
Quality checks validate.
MRO’s Data Integrity System layers additional review across the data lifecycle. Clinical experts spend 11,000+ hours per month on quality-related checks — not as an afterthought, but as a designed layer of the system.
- Data Integrity System
- 11,000+ QA hrs/month
The output ships — with the audit trail intact.
Curated data flows into registries, dashboards, research environments, or wherever it’s needed. This loop is what makes Collaborative Intelligence different from “human-in-the-loop AI output.” It is a learning system, not a checkpoint.
- Registries
- Dashboards
- Research

Why Infrastructure Matters
AI is only as good as the data it sees.
Collaborative Intelligence is AI, automation, and clinical experts working in partnership. Infrastructure isn’t part of that partnership, but it’s what makes the partnership possible.
For AI to produce reliable results in healthcare, the underlying infrastructure has to be right. Data has to flow in cleanly, structure consistently, and route to the workflows that need it.
That infrastructure is MRO’s Clinical Data Exchange Platform (CDXP) — a proprietary, FHIR-native interoperability framework that ingests clinical data in any format and structures it for downstream use.
Without infrastructure, AI is a demo. With it, AI becomes a system.
Clinical Data Exchange Platform (CDXP)
The foundation that makes Prodigy possible.
Proprietary, FHIR-native interoperability that ingests any data format and structures it for AI-powered curation workflows.
- FHIR-native — 233+ EHR connections
- Ingests any clinical data format
- SOC 2 + HITRUST certified
- Structured for downstream AI and analytics
- Scales from 1 facility to 150+
Where It Operates
One framework, applied across our portfolio.
Collaborative Intelligence is not a feature. It is the operating model behind MRO’s work, expressed across both Curation Solutions and Exchange Services.
AI Engine
Prodigy™
Our AI engine, embedded in the abstraction workflow across Q-Apps. The technology powering Collaborative Intelligence.
Technology Platform
Q-Apps®
The tech stack where humans and AI share a workspace. Built for abstractors, powered by Prodigy.
Quality System
Data Integrity System
Layered QA combining clinical expertise and AI-assisted validation. 11,000+ quality-related hours per month.
Clinical Trials
Clinetic
AI-assisted patient identification with clinical experts supporting screening and enrollment for clinical trials.
Exchange Services
Release of Information
AI-powered auto-logging and PHI detection — 1M+ request letters processed, 10x QC cost reduction vs. legacy OCR.
Enablement
The Institute
MRO’s training program developing clinical experts who work effectively with AI tools — closing the loop on the partnership.
Built on Execution
Collaborative Intelligence didn’t start with AI.
The principles behind Collaborative Intelligence — clinical experts as the system of record, layered quality checks, continuous training, deep registry expertise — have been the foundation of MRO’s work for more than two decades.
AI is the newest component in the framework, not the first.
The question with healthcare AI is rarely “Can the model do the task?” It is “Can the organization deploying it stand behind the result?” MRO can.
